Glasson Sea Defences

The Environment Agency, in association with Lancaster City Council and Lancaster Port Commission (LPC), has issued the following community update:

Glasson Sea Defences and High Tides

The Environment Agency is continuing to work with Lancaster Port Commission (LPC) on plans to permanently repair the sea gate at Glasson Dock. The mechanism that opens and closes the sea gate is not working and the gate remains in the open position.

We know that the local community is concerned that there is an increased risk of flooding during the high tides expected over the next few days. The current forecast is for tidal levels to be below the level when the Environment Agency would normally issue a flood warning for the area. This being the case, it is currently not expecting any flooding over the next few days due to the sea gate being open.

High tides are also expected at the end of August and the beginning of September. The Environment Agency is working with LPC on plans for temporary work to the sea gate to manage flood risk during these high tides. The plan is to ensure that the temporary work gives the same level of flood protection as usually provided by the closed sea gate. We will publish a further update with more information about this nearer the time.

The Environment Agency is also working with LPC on plans for a permanent repair to the sea gate. We will publish more information about this in a future update.
