Trust Port
As a Trust Port our aim is to deliver prosperity to Glasson Dock and the wider region.
Being a Trust Port means we have special responsibilities. We have stakeholders instead of shareholders and our Board of Commissioners ensures we act in the interest of the next generation, taking care of the port.
Growing our core shipping business allows us to invest in the Port of Lancaster assets, including heritage, infrastructure, equipment and people. This investment means we are uniquely placed to deliver a prosperous future for the port as well as for the people and businesses close by and in the wider community.
Our ultimate duty is to hand over a port that actively contributes to economic, community, cultural, and environmental prosperity to the next generation.
Anchored in Community
A strong commercial core of shipping enables us to contribute to the experience of local people, attract visitors and help to make Glasson Dock and the wider region a great place to live, work and visit.
Immersed in our community, we nurture partnerships with many diverse stakeholders. We also continually explore new markets and innovations with the aim of expanding that collaborative network.
Our contribution to the local and regional economy includes the provision of employment as well as import and export facilities for local business.
We also strive to give back by supporting local charities and causes.

We aim to ensure sustainable economic growth whilst protecting the environment. It is our responsibility to meet today’s needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
Shipping is by far the most carbon efficient way to move freight and to further reduce impact, we have invested to provide shoreside power on our berths. Our green, decarbonisation agenda affords opportunities for stakeholder collaboration to explore innovative energy solutions.
The installation of EV charge points for port staff, visitors and port users marked another milestone in our decarbonisation journey.
Custodians of
a national asset
Like all UK ports, our facilities form part of critical national infrastructure. Trust Ports are bodies created under statute for the purpose of maintaining and improving harbour and port facilities and assets.
As custodians, the current Board of Commissioners acts in the interest of the next generation, taking care of the port. Growing our core business of shipping allows us to invest in our assets including heritage, infrastructure, equipment and people. That investment means we can fulfil our statutory duty to hand over the port in a better and safer state.
Steeped in
Heritage
We know that the first ships from Lancaster to Virginia sailed in 1688 to import ‘hogsheads of tobacco’. In 1750, the Lancaster Port Commission was founded and since 1787, there’s been a port at Glasson Dock. In Georgian and Victorian times, it was the largest port in the north west, importing cotton, sugar and spices.
The Port of Lancaster is an integral part of the history of Lancaster and Glasson Dock. As the current custodians, we aim to build on that rich heritage and to share it with the wider community. To expand a sense of place and people around the port, we collaborate with interested stakeholders to continue to preserve the cultural capital ofthe port for future generations.
