New Materials Handling Machinery Transforms Port Operations

The Port of Lancaster has reached a significant milestone in securing its long-term sustainability with the successful arrival and deployment of its new Liebherr LH60 Material Handler, marking a significant step in our transition to in-house stevedoring operations.

The top of the range materials handling machinery, sourced from the Netherlands and supplied by Ruttle Plant Hire of Chorley, arrived on the 16 January with installation completed that week. By 20 January, the equipment was operational and handling the Port’s first bulk vessel of 2026 – demonstrating the swift transition from investment to active service.

This substantial capital investment represents a strategic decision to manage stevedoring operations in-house, with the Port taking the lead role while working alongside third-party providers. Our long-term goal is to bring these operations fully in-house as we continue to invest in infrastructure and machinery.

With the machinery now operational through early February, the Port has reduced dependencies on hired-in equipment. Working alongside third-party providers, we now have greater control over vessel schedules and enhanced ability to respond quickly to customer requirements.

Early results confirm the anticipated cost savings and revenue benefits. Each vessel handled generates income that contributes directly to the Port’s long-term financial resilience. Existing customers have noted faster turnaround times and more consistent service levels. This enhanced capability is also strengthening the Port’s proposition when engaging with prospective new customers.

The transition hasn’t been purely about equipment. Existing Port staff are being upskilled to operate the new material handler, currently shadowing and learning the ropes as they work alongside experienced third-party operators. This internal capability development will ensure the Port can deliver reliable operations while building valuable expertise within the team.

As a Trust Port, every decision at Port of Lancaster is guided by responsibility to the local community and regional businesses. This investment exemplifies that commitment – it’s not just about operational efficiency, but about creating sustainable employment, supporting local partners, and ensuring the Port remains a viable part of the regional economy for years to come.

All revenue generated goes back into preserving the historic port area and supporting continued operations, rather than being extracted as profit. Every tonne handled brings economic benefit to the local area.

With multiple vessels successfully handled since the machinery became operational and more scheduled through February and beyond, the investment is already proving its value. The Port of Lancaster now has the infrastructure, capability, and partnerships in place to deliver reliable, cost-effective stevedoring services while maintaining its role as a responsible, community-focused Trust Port.
